Rental Rewind II

FINAL RESULT:

SOFTWARE USED:

Adobe Photoshop for Storyboard
Adobe Animation for Logo Animation Drawing
Adobe Premiere Pro for Post-production

OVERVIEW:

This is the work for the course New Media Practicum. I worked for Crooked Cinema which is about to start a new season of a game show called Rental Rewind. My job is to make an intro animation of their current logo. For the show, Crooked Cinema granted me creative freedom on the project, allowing me to present my idea to them and bring the product to life with my imagination.

Because it is season 2 of the game show, I think it will be great to include some highlights of the season one clips first then translate it to some highlights of the season two clips. Then, the way I planned to present the logo was to make it more like an arcade, with some lights flashing on the two arrows in the logo, and make an animation to let the robot hand actually hold the text. After the animation, I would like to put the number "2" on the right corner of the logo to show it is season 2.

LOGO INTO ANIMATION WITHOUT EFFECT - VERSION 2:

ABOUT ANIMATION:

After I finished the storyboard, I started drawing the animation part of the storyboard. It is a four-second animation with motion graphics and hand drawing.

The slimy and the hand, which is the hand drawing part, spent most of my time in this animation. I set the frame rate to 12 to ease the animation-making process, however, the frames I used are way less than I thought. On the bright side, I do have more time to draw the detail of it like colouring.

I altered the attire for number 2 based on the feedback provided by Ms. Sarah. Additionally, I must incorporate more effects to finalize the entire intro video in accordance with the storyboard. Finally, I made further modifications as necessary.

EARLY VERSION OF THE PRODUCT:

FINAL PRODUCTION:

After submitting the first edition of the video, they suggested that I shift gears and modify the beginning.

They explained that their set is dramatically different from last year's (season). For instance, Season 1 involved 3 vs 3 gameplay and required in-person participation, while Season 2 featured 1 vs 1 matches with video calling. Furthermore, Season 1 focused on movies, whereas Season 2 centered around video games.

Consequently, I need to adjust my output to incorporate this additional information. I have shortened the video and replaced clips from Season 1 with different assets that can still evoke the competitive atmosphere.

FINAL RESULT:

INSPIRATIONS & RESEARCH:

> Early Production:

Mainly, I watched the Marvel Studios Intro and more to gather inspiration. Additionally, I checked the original file of the logo to know how many parts I can modify.

> Final Production:

After understanding the differences between the two seasons, I needed to generate ideas to take the video in a new direction. I examined the assets provided by the company and used my imagination to explore different permutations, considering how they could be presented. Finally, I achieved the best result possible and implemented it!

PAIN POINTS & CHALLENGES:

When earning creative freedom, it also means it would be hard to control the direction and quality.

> Direction Confirm:

Because I did not know what exactly the logo meant, when I needed to make an intro for it, I was really scared my idea would go against the original meaning of the logo. To try my best to avoid the probably issue, I observed the logo as detailed as I could, to catch and find that it mainly wanted a chocking and playable image. So, the storyboard I came up with follows the thing I found, and it turned out well for the client.

> Quality Control:

It is hard to keep the same art style as the original. Especially the robot’s hand has at least seven different colours on it, so I need to know when to use what colour and what shape it might be.

I also tried to make the slimy different from the normal water, it should be a little bit lumpy and sticky. So, I make it move slower than water when it is moving but fly a little bit faster than water when it is splashing.

> Direction Conflict:

I faced challenges when I received additional information because it essentially meant I couldn't use footage from Season 1. Fortunately, I'm pleased that I could still find some assets from Season 2 that suited the situation.

> Time Management:

While collaborating with Crooked Cinema, I also had to manage other responsibilities such as the Capstone Project, Independent Study, and the Production Company. Additionally, I served as the team leader for the Capstone Project and was responsible for scheduling the team at the Production Company. Consequently, I had to carefully coordinate all my schedules to avoid conflicts and ensure one didn't adversely affect the other. Luckily, there weren't many unexpected situations, allowing me to handle everything within the set time.

ABOUT MY PRACTICUM:

> Company Name: Crooked Cinema

> My Role: Graphic Animator

> Work Completed:

Create a logo intro video with animation that includes early-stage production processes such as storyboarding, as well as the pure animation output for future editions.

> Knowledge Gaps:

Based on my experience, I believe that my NMPD classes encompass all the areas of knowledge and skills I need. These classes have aided me in collaborating with my mentor and establishing a reasonable workflow for the tasks at hand.

> Workplace Environment and Mentorship:

My mentor is Sarah Parker, a co-owner of Crooked Cinema. Her expertise is derived from her experience as the owner of a New Media Production Company. I conducted my practicum remotely and primarily communicated with my mentor via email, with Discord as a secondary means of communication.

> Career Goals:

I am having a great time collaborating with Crooked Cinema! After completing the practicum, I feel more confident in what I can bring to the field and my profession. I plan to maintain my career goal, which is to become an animator. While I enjoy working remotely, I believe it's still really important to gain in-person work experience in Canada, as that was the main reason I left my hometown – to experience cultural differences.

> Full-Time Work Prospects:

Students can reasonably anticipate the possibility of their practicum evolving into full-time employment, contingent upon the quality of their work and their communication skills. The company is likely to recall the collaborative experience with the students, increasing the chances of choosing them as future co-workers due to their enhanced understanding of the company's needs and preferences. A successful practicum can serve as a valuable gateway to securing future employment opportunities by establishing a positive rapport with the company and showcasing not only one's capabilities but also adaptability.

MY EXPERIENCE COLLABORATING WITH CROOKED CINEMA:

> Start My Practicum:

Q: What were your initial expectations and goals when you began your practicum, and how have they evolved since then?

At the start of my practicum, I anticipated creating simple motion graphics using only After Effects from their existing assets. However, once I understood the tasks I needed to accomplish, they granted me creative freedom in the production process. Consequently, I sought a more effective approach to showcase their logo by animating it using Adobe Animate and enhancing the effects with Adobe After Effects after the initial animation process.

Q: What surprised you or stood out as you transitioned from the classroom to the real-world environment of your practicum?

I found that gathering task information in a real-world setting is more challenging than in a classroom, where the instructor provides a comprehensive description and explanation of the assignment. In a professional environment, we must independently identify and comprehend the work requirements by posing effective questions. Additionally, our instructors in the workplace may not have a preconceived notion of what we might present, reducing the likelihood of misunderstandings or overestimations of the quality of work we can deliver. Conversely, in the real world, we must articulate what we can contribute to the company, demonstrating flexibility and predictability regarding the quality of work based on the available time constraints.

Q: What challenges did you face in the early stages of your practicum, and how did you overcome them?

In the initial stages, I lacked clarity on when and how to submit my work. I hesitated to inquire about the production process and workflow, concerned it might appear unprofessional. To address this, I convinced myself to ask, demonstrating professionalism by proposing a potential solution. Upon sending the message to my mentor, she praised my proactive approach, acknowledging it as a manifestation of my passion for the project. She also agreed with the direction I suggested. Consequently, we now have a clear understanding of how the project will proceed and the corresponding process.

Milena Panina:
Incredible reflection, Tzu-Lin. I absolutely loved and connected with every word in your answer to question 2. I was reading it and just nodding, agreeing with everything. I experienced what you describe (as a lot of our classmates did as well perhaps, but didn't realize it until you put it into words.

> Midway Through My Practicum:

Q: Can you describe a specific project or task that has challenged you the most so far, and what have you learned from it?

For the practicum, the most significant challenge I encountered was implementing a directional change prompted by additional information that had not been previously mentioned. Initially, I believed the video I created should establish a connection with Season 1, as it is a consistent theme for the show. When I developed the storyboard, my direction received approval, leading me to believe the process would proceed smoothly and effectively. However, after submitting the first edition of my product, my mentor expressed concerns that the content in the clips was heading in a direction contrary to their preferences. I was informed that I needed to exclude video clips from Season 1 and find different materials that aligned with the desired elements, ultimately creating a second version of the video. This experience taught me that despite a seemingly rigorous making process, unforeseen changes can arise, and you never know what challenges may impact your work. Fortunately, I had sufficient time to make the necessary modifications, ensuring the product would still be delivered on time.

Q: How have you collaborated with your colleagues or mentor to contribute effectively to your team's projects?

Towards the end of the practicum, we conducted a Discord chat where our peers shared their work, allowing us to exchange thoughts and feedback. I made an effort to contribute my insights to both my peers and mentor through the Discord chat. Being able to view others' work for the same project was a valuable experience, creating a sense of camaraderie and teamwork.

Q: Have there been any unexpected opportunities or experiences that have enriched your learning during the middle part of your practicum?

My mentor introduced me to another team that expressed interest in having a conversation with me after seeing my work. I connected with the team, and they assigned me some job opportunities, agreeing to commence their project after my graduation. It was entirely unexpected to gain the chance to work with another team and receive a job opportunity. I am genuinely delighted that my work has been praised, and I am impressed by the various methods we can use to connect with different people.

David Virgilio Chavero:
What a nightmare, steering the wheel in the opposite direction because of a lack of communication (I'm sorry). What I mean is that I experienced something similar, and I can say that bothered me. The good thing here is that you are super fast, and I have no doubt you solved the issue on time.
Congratulations on that offer!! You deserved it. Happy to hear that.

Milena Panina:
I was so excited to read about the networking opportunity you received. I've always been impressed by your projects, skills and work ethic, so I am beyond thrilled to hear that other people recognize your talents as well. This is the ultimate outcome from a practicum I guess, to highlight yourself and continue climbing the career ladder. Cheers to you, Tzu-Lin!

> Closing In On The End Of My Practicum:

Q: What skills or knowledge have you acquired during your practicum that you believe will be the most valuable for your future career in new media?

To be honest, I consider the most valuable assets I've gained to be the working experience and the contributions I've made to their project—beneficial for enhancing my portfolio and resume. As for skills and knowledge, I believe they are already encompassed in my learning journey at SAIT. If I had to pick one, I would say it is the development of a professional way of communication. Practicing formal and polite communication with the company is invaluable.

Q: Reflect on the feedback you've received from your mentor. How have you incorporated this feedback to improve your performance?

Firstly, I will ensure that I fully understand the meaning of the feedback by asking additional questions. Once we are on the same page, I will proceed to follow the given directions and update my work accordingly. Finally, I will review both versions of the work to discern the differences, aiding my understanding of the impact of the changes made.

Q: Looking back, what advice would you give to future students about to embark on a similar practicum experience in new media?

It is crucial to demonstrate confidence in your skills. Additionally, it is advisable to be proactive, considering that most mentors are occupied with other tasks. Being flexible in such situations is beneficial. For instance, when I haven't received feedback or suggestions from the mentor, I proactively take the initiative by sending a follow-up email and preparing for the next task instead of merely waiting for a response.

Q: How has your understanding of the new media industry changed throughout your practicum, and how do you envision your role within it after completing your program?

Originally, I thought working for others would always be less interesting than working for myself. I found that I was wrong. Working with Crooked Cinema is genuinely fascinating because they are an open-minded team, and their thoughts align somewhat with mine, making communication and collaboration easy. I envision my future role to be a combination of my current responsibilities and some counseling tasks since we often need to explain and share our thoughts with clarity when handling a task.

Ryan Ngo:
Being an effective communicator is in my opinion the most important skill for our industry. Making sure you are on the same page as the rest of your team is super important because misunderstandings leads to set backs, frustrations, and things just flat out falling apart entirely. I also agree that being able to work with others is a lot of fun especially since the people you are working with are like minded individuals that you could easily get along with since you all share a similar passion.
